In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index lost 85.57 points, or 0.2%, to 38,837.46.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index progressed 41.07 points, or 0.2%, to 18,444.11.
In other markets
In Shanghai, the CSI 300 gained 26.92 points, or 0.8%, to 3,615.57.
In Korea, the Kospi index shed 20.42 points, or 0.8%, to 2,662,10.
In Singapore, the Straits Times Index dropped 9.93 points, or 0.3%, to 3,338.94.
In Taiwan, the Taiex index fell 180.14 points, or 0.8%, to 21,356.62
In New Zealand, the NZX 50 returned from a long weekend to gain 13.25 points, or 0.1%, to 11,880.54
In Australia, the ASX 200 backpedaled 23.97 points, or 0.3%, to 7,737.06.
