Mean Girls, the musical teen comedy based on 2004’s hit of the same name, snatched up the number one spot at the box office for the second straight weekend from January 19-21. There were some stories floating around that suggested audiences were disappointed when they found out it was a musical. Regardless, the movie raked in $11.6 million over the weekend, which was nearly a 60% decline in box office revenues compared to the previous week.
The Jason Stathan-led action-thriller The Beekeeper claimed second place at the weekend box office in consecutive weeks, bringing in $8.60 million. Its box office revenues slipped 48% week over week. Meanwhile, Wonka continued its strong showing in the New Year as it snatched up the third place slot. Its $6.71 million in box office gross brought its total domestic gross to $187 million. Migration and Anyone But You rounded out the top five, bringing in $5.46 million and $5.40 million, respectively.
AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) remains the top movie theater operator in North America. Its shares have plunged 29% in 2024 as of close on Tuesday, January 23. The cinema giant will be rooting for an injection of enthusiasm as we await the February movie slate.
Some of the potential box office hits slated for release in February 2024 include Argylle, Madame Web, the live-action Sesame Street movie, and Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls.
