Wonka has generated the biggest buzz at the cinema since the dual debut of Barbie and Oppenheimer back in the summer of 2023. The Timothée Chalamet-led prequel has raked in $178 million at the domestic box office as at Monday, January 15, 2024. Wonka was finally toppled from its perch over the mid-January box office weekend.
Mean Girls, the musical remake of the hit 2004 comedy, pulled in $33.2 million at the domestic box office over the January 12-15 weekend. The original Mean Girls, which debuted 20 years ago, managed to generate $86.0 million at the domestic box office over the entirety of its run. The musical rendition has already outperformed the original at the opening weekend, but it remains to be seen whether it has the legs to surpass it.
The Beekeeper, the most recent Jason Statham action vehicle, came in second at the weekend box office with $19 million in revenues generated. Wonka found in third place, having raked in $11.0 million. Meanwhile, the romantic comedy Anyone But You and the animated family film Migration pulled in $8.5 million and $8.3 million, respectively, rounding out the top five performers over the past weekend.
AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) remains the largest movie theater operator in North America. Unfortunately, it has started very poorly after being throttled through 2023. Its shares have dropped 90% year-over-year as of close on Monday, January 15, 2024. AMC Entertainment will need a big year at the cinema to have a chance at stopping the ongoing bloodbath.
