The union representing maintenance workers at privately held WestJet Airlines has canceled the 72-hour strike notice it had issued and returned to the bargaining table.
The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) union, which represents maintenance workers at the privately held carrier, said it rescinded its strike notice as both parties agree to resume labour negotiations aimed at reaching a collective agreement.
The union is demanding improved working conditions and higher salaries for its members. Maintenance workers at WestJet had been planning to strike later today (June 20).
Management at WestJet had referred the labour dispute to the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) in hopes that binding arbitration would lead to a new agreement.
However, the CIRB said it will require additional time and submissions from both parties before deciding on whether arbitration is necessary. It encouraged the two sides to keep talking.
WestJet is also returning to normal operations after the airline canceled 40 flights in recent days, disrupting nearly 7,000 travelers.
